The tourism

A billion-dollar market that moves the world hides a dark side: the often devastating socio-environmental impacts it generates. Between paradisiacal selfies and enchanting landscapes, local communities can suffer from exploitation, inequality and environmental degradation.

Side effects

The hegemonic model of tourism causes depredation of delicate ecosystems around the world, accumulation of garbage and animal cruelty, as well as the marginalization of native populations, with the expropriation of their lands and the mischaracterization of their ways of life.

The change

But do not need be like that! Isopo believes that tourism can be a force for good, as long as it is carried out in a responsible and sustainable way. Through education, awareness and empowerment of communities, we can build a fairer and more positive tourism model for everyone.

Inequality

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) reveals a worrying fact: only 5% of what a foreign tourist spends in a developing country goes to the local community. In other words, most of the money will go to large companies, such as airlines, travel agencies and chain hotels, often based in other countries.

A classic example is Trancoso-BA. A place with luxurious resorts that charge daily rates above R$2,000 and where more than 80% of GDP comes from tourism. Despite this, the vast majority of the population lives in poverty.
